Portal is a Virtual Meeting Place in Web, where People share information among
themselves. The Portal can be a Vertical or Horizontal Portal. If the Portal is
focussing on one particular Industry then the Portal is called as Vertical
Portal or Vortal. If the same is having information of more than one particular
industry then that is called as Horizontal Portal or simply Portal.
General Architecture of a Portal:
The Web user navigates through the Portal and gets the related information he is
looking for. The information to be published in the portal is posted to the
Portal Administrator. The Portal Administrator scrutinizes the contents and he
updates the Portal Database with the newly posted information. This newly
updated information is now available in the Portal for other web users.
Portal Framework:
The Web Users can browse through all the pages of the Portal and view the
information directly (Through HTTP). But the pages having any commercial
components like Shopping Cart are to be accessed through Secured Socket Layer.
The Information posted by the User are to be accessed by authorized persons
through pages protected by password. Similarly Updation of the Database can
also be done through pages protected by Password.
